Mutianyu - the best balance

- A private car gives the most flexibility, but compare the total return cost and confirm the pick-up point before you leave the city.
Badaling - the easy rail option
- Rail is the most straightforward independent option from Beijing, but timetable, station and transfer details must be checked for the chosen day.
- It has the broadest accessible infrastructure of the major sections; confirm current accessibility and lift/cable-car arrangements with the venue before relying on them.
- The trade-off is popularity: Badaling can be extremely busy, especially around weekends, school breaks and public holidays.
The Summer Palace: the graceful half-day
A slower palace-and-lake day in northwest Beijing.
Why it works
- A major imperial-garden landscape built around Kunming Lake, the Long Corridor and the Tower of Buddhist Incense.
- Metro Line 4 to Xiyuan station, then a ten-minute walk to the East Gate. Forty minutes from the centre.
- The official site publishes seasonal admission and separate combined-ticket options. Check what is included before buying; the lake and Long Corridor justify at least half a day.
The Ming Tombs: history with the wall
An imperial burial landscape northwest of the city.
How to see them
- The Dingling (定陵) tomb is the excavated one, with the underground palace of the Wanli Emperor as its centrepiece. Check the current ticket and opening notice.
- The Sacred Way (神道), a processional avenue lined with stone animals and officials, is the photographic heart of the site.
- They combine naturally with a Great Wall visit on the same day, since both lie to the northwest of the city - a morning at the wall and an afternoon among the tombs works well with a private car.
Gubei Water Town: the night escape
Two hours from the city, at the foot of Simatai - the one worth staying for.
Why it works
- A rebuilt canal town on the Miyun reservoir, set directly beneath Simatai's unrestored wall.
- The water town and Wall may use separate or combined products depending on the date. Check the official package before paying.
- Selected Simatai night visits are a reason to stay, but dates, access and illumination arrangements are operational details rather than a permanent promise.
- The long road transfer makes an overnight more comfortable than forcing the town into a rushed day trip.
Tianjin: a different China by rail
A fast intercity rail journey, plus station transfers at both ends.
Why it works
- High-speed rail links Beijing South and Tianjin, but frequency, fare and journey time vary by service. Check outbound and return trains before leaving the hotel.
- The Hai River waterfront and the concession-era architecture around Five Great Avenues (五大道) are the main draw.
- Wander the food streets around the ancient culture street (古文化街) for local snacks, and walk the waterfront at dusk.
- Best as a change of pace after the Beijing classics, not instead of them.
Choose by travel style, not by a longer list

For a first visit
Choose one Great Wall section. It is the day trip that changes the shape of a Beijing visit, and it needs daylight, good shoes and a little patience. Add the Summer Palace only if you have another day in the city; combining both in a single independent day usually leaves the best parts of each feeling rushed.
For a return visit
Choose Tianjin if you want a change in pace, or Gubei if the idea of an overnight is more appealing than another long city day. The Ming Tombs are most rewarding to travellers who already enjoy imperial history; they are not a substitute for the Wall. This is the useful filter: choose the outing with a different texture from the days you have already planned.
