Mutianyu - the best balance

• 90 minutes from central Beijing by car or the public tourist bus. Admission ¥45, cable car ¥100 round trip, toboggan for the way down.
• Restored, genuinely beautiful, and moderately crowded compared with Badaling. Book tickets online the night before via the WeChat mini-programme or Trip.com.
• A Didi from the city runs roughly ¥300-450 each way - with two or three people it beats the tour bus for flexibility.

Badaling - the easy rail option

• The high-speed rail from Beijing North to Badaling station takes 22 minutes and costs ¥21-28. This is the fastest door-to-door option there is.
• Admission ¥40, cable car ¥140 round trip. Wheelchair and pram friendly - the most accessible section.
• The trade-off is the crowds: Badaling is the section on every Chinese school tour and every group itinerary.

Why it works

• China's most beautiful imperial garden: Kunming Lake, the Long Corridor's painted ceilings, and the Tower of Buddhist Incense looking back over the water.
• Metro Line 4 to Xiyuan station, then a ten-minute walk to the East Gate. Forty minutes from the centre.
• Admission ¥30 (grounds) or ¥60 (combined ticket). A boat across the lake and the Long Corridor walk fill a comfortable three hours.

How to see them

• The Dingling (定陵) tomb is the excavated one - the underground palace of the Wanli Emperor is the centrepiece, admission ¥60.
• The Sacred Way (神道), a processional avenue lined with stone animals and officials, is the photographic heart of the site.
• They combine naturally with a Great Wall visit on the same day, since both lie to the northwest of the city - a morning at the wall and an afternoon among the tombs works well with a private car.

Why it works

• A rebuilt canal town on the Miyun reservoir, set directly beneath Simatai's unrestored wall.
• Combined entry ¥140; the water town lights up at night and the wall above it follows.
• Night tickets for Simatai are ¥160 and the illuminated wall is the single most photographed view in northern China.
• It is a two-hour drive each way - book a night in one of the town's courtyard hotels rather than turning it around in a day.

Why it works

• The high-speed rail from Beijing South to Tianjin runs every ten minutes or so; ¥54-66 each way, about 30 minutes.
• The Hai River waterfront and the century-old Five Great Avenues (五大道) - the largest concession-era quarter in China - are the draw.
• Wander the food streets around the ancient culture street (古文化街) for local snacks, and walk the waterfront at dusk.
• Best as a change of pace after the Beijing classics, not instead of them.

Trains and tickets

• Book wall tickets online - the WeChat mini-programme or Trip.com - the night before. There are rarely same-day walk-up tickets in season.
• For rail trips, buy your return when you arrive; evening trains sell out on weekends.

Money and payment

• Alipay covers tickets, meals and the odd temple donation. Keep ¥200-300 cash for the smallest vendors.

How far is the Summer Palace from central Beijing?
