Chongqing: how many days, and where the views are

Two nights covers the peninsula and the night view. Three gives you the west side or a day in the karst. Here is what each hour is worth.

The short answer

Chongqing is a two-night city with a three-night case.

Two nights for the peninsula, Hongyadong after dark and one ride on the monorail. Three nights if you want Wulong or Dazu, because both eat a full day once you count the transfers. Four nights if you would rather see both and still have an evening on the south bank.

Two nights is the honest minimum: it covers the city at night and leaves the karst for another trip. Three is the shape most people end up preferring, with the middle day spent out of town.

If you are pairing Chongqing with Chengdu, put Chongqing second. The train takes 1h to 1h30m, and arriving into the hills after a few flat days makes the city read properly.

Our guide to how many days to give each Chinese city covers the wider routing question.

The views, and when to stand there

The photographs that bring people here are three places, and only one of them is at its best after dark.

ViewBest timeHow to get thereCrowds
Hongyadong, from the Qiansimen Bridge Lights on 19:00, off 23:00. Go at 19:00, or after 22:00 Metro Line 2 to Linjiangmen, or Lines 1 and 2 to Jiaochangkou. Take the lift to the 11th floor and walk out onto the bridge Heaviest 20:00 to 22:00, and all weekend
Liziba, the train through the building Daylight, before 17:00 Metro Line 2, Liziba station. The viewing platform sits at street level below the track Steady, rarely unmanageable
The Yangtze cable car Late afternoon, or after 20:00 North station on Xinhua Road, ten minutes on foot from Jiefangbei. Metro Line 2 to Linjiangmen Worst from 11:00 to 16:00
The peninsula skyline, from Nanbin Road 19:30 onwards Metro Line 6 to Shangxinjie, then a taxi along the road Spread out along the bank

Hongyadong's lights come on at 19:00 and go off at 23:00. The switch-on moved earlier in late September as sunset came forward, so an older guide that says 19:30 is out of date.

The lift to the 11th floor puts you at road level, because the building runs down a cliff rather than up from the street.

The cable car runs 08:00 to 22:00, and until 23:00 on public holidays. A single ride is ¥30 and a return is ¥50, at the government-guided price set in January 2025.

The queue is the variable, not the ride, and our metro guide covers the payment side.

How this city works

Two rivers, several levels, and a metro that is not a grid.

Chongqing is built in layers between the Yangtze and the Jialing. Two lines cross at Jiaochangkou on the peninsula, which is why so many hotels cluster there.

Line 2 is the monorail: it runs along the river, through the building at Liziba, and the stretch between Fotuguan and Liziba is worth an hour of anyone's first afternoon.

The four lines you will actually use

  • Line 1 — Jiefangbei and Ciqikou, with Shapingba at the rail station end.
  • Line 2 — the monorail along the river, Liziba included. Crosses Line 1 at Jiaochangkou.
  • Line 10 — the one that matters on arrival, from Terminal 3.

Walking distances here are not what the map suggests. A block can mean stairs, an escalator, or a lift through a building to a street you cannot see.

Comfortable shoes are not a cliché in this city. They are the difference between two districts in an afternoon.

Taxis start at ¥10, and ¥11 overnight. For two people crossing a river the meter is often cheaper than the metro once you count the walking, and drivers know which ramp reaches your hotel.

Traffic builds from about 17:30. If your hotel is across the river from your dinner, leave early or take the metro.

Three days, in order

Peninsula, west side, then out of town.

Day one · the peninsula

Jiefangbei in the afternoon, the cable car if the queue is short, and Hongyadong at 19:00 when the lights come on. Cross the Qiansimen Bridge on foot for the photograph everyone recognises, then eat hot pot within walking distance of Jiaochangkou.

Day two · west along Line 2

Liziba in the morning, then Line 1 to Ciqikou for the old town, and Shapingba if you want the rail-station side of the city. Come back for dusk on Nanbin Road, where the whole peninsula faces you across the water.

Day three · out of the city

Wulong for the karst, or Dazu for the rock carvings. Both are day trips built on a high-speed leg plus a road transfer, and both reward an early start. Details in the table further down.

Two days, or four

Where to cut, and where to add.

Two days means dropping the day trip. Keep the peninsula and the night view, add Liziba on the way out, and accept that the karst will have to wait.

Four days means Wulong gets its own full day rather than being squeezed, and Dazu can be a half day on the way back from somewhere else. It also leaves room for Jiangbeizui and the towers at Chaotianmen, where the two rivers meet.

Beyond four days is a different trip. Chongqing rewards repetition, but not in the first week.

What to eat, and how

Hot pot is the reason many people come. The ordering is simpler than it looks.

Choose the divided pot if anyone at the table is unsure, because the mild side is genuinely mild. The nine-grid pot is for cooking different things at different speeds, not for show.

The dip is sesame oil, garlic and coriander, made at the table. It is there to cool the food rather than to thicken it.

Breakfast is xiaomian, a bowl of noodles with chilli oil that costs less than a coffee. Lunch can be cold chicken or a bowl of douhua.

Dinner is hot pot again if you have the appetite. The cooking is not only heat: the smoked and cured flavours are worth ordering, and the river fish is better than its reputation.

Where to stay

Three districts carry almost every first visit.

AreaWho it suitsTrade-off
Jiefangbei & Hongyadong First visits. Lines 1 and 2 cross at Jiaochangkou, Hongyadong is on foot, and every river crossing starts here The most congested part of the city
Guanyinqiao Better value, with Line 3 to the peninsula and no change Twenty to thirty minutes from the sights
Nanbin Road The skyline view, and a quieter base across the water A taxi ride to reach the centre

One question matters more here than in most cities: ask which street entrance a taxi can reach, and whether there is a lift. A hotel billed as Jiefangbei can sit up a hill with no road access.

The full comparison, area by area and with rates, is in our guide to where to stay in Chongqing.

Out of the city

Two day trips worth the early start, and one that is not a day trip at all.

TripGetting thereWorth it?
Wulong, the three natural bridges 38 to 47 minutes to Wulong South, then 30 to 45 minutes by road to the visitor centre Yes, but it is a full day and the transfer is not optional
Dazu, the rock carvings 26 to 33 minutes to Dazu South, then 20 to 30 minutes by taxi to Baodingshan Yes. Half a day of travel for two hours of carving
Chengdu 1h to 1h30m by train Not as a day trip. Stay the night or go for two

Trains to Wulong South leave from Chongqing East, North and West depending on the service, so check the station as well as the time. Second class is ¥62 to ¥71.

Dazu is the easier of the two: second class runs ¥32 to ¥41, and the taxi from the station to Baodingshan is short enough to make a morning of it.

For anything longer than a day, our train booking guide covers passports and collection at the station.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Four that cost people an afternoon each.

1

Booking a hotel that a car cannot reach.

The fix: in a hill city, “in Jiefangbei” can mean up a flight of stairs from the nearest road. Ask which entrance a taxi can use, and whether there is a lift.

2

Planning by map distance.

The fix: the straight line between two points on the peninsula may cross three levels. Check the metro first, then the meter.

3

Arriving at Hongyadong at 21:30 on a Saturday.

The fix: the lights stay on until 23:00, but the bridge and the viewing platforms do not thin out until after 22:00.

4

Assuming Xi'an is two and a half hours away.

The fix: the new high-speed line is not open yet. Until it is, the fastest train to Xi'an takes more than five hours, and the 2.5-hour figure belongs to a timetable that has not started.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Chongqing?

Two nights for the peninsula and the night view, three if you want Wulong or Dazu.

Is Chongqing walkable?

Not in the way most cities are. A short distance on the map can mean stairs, escalators or a lift through a building. The metro and cheap taxis do most of the work.

Where is that night view I keep seeing?

Hongyadong, on the Jialing side of the peninsula. The photograph is usually taken from the Qiansimen Bridge, or from the far bank at Jiangbeizui.

When do the Hongyadong lights come on?

At 19:00, and they go off at 23:00. The switch-on moved earlier in late September, so older guides that say 19:30 are out of date.

Can I see Chongqing as a day trip from Chengdu?

You can reach it in about an hour, but the city needs a night. The night view is the point, and the last train back leaves before it is properly dark.

How do I get from Jiangbei airport to Jiefangbei?

Metro Line 10 from Terminal 3, changing at Hongtudi to Line 6 for Xiaoshizi: about 45 to 50 minutes for ¥2 to ¥7. The K01 shuttle is ¥15 and takes 50 to 70 minutes.
