Where to Stay in Chongqing
Chongqing stacks itself in layers between two rivers, and the address you pick decides whether a kilometre is a walk or a lift ride. Here is what each district actually feels like, and what it costs.
The short version
- First visit: Jiefangbei, on the peninsula, where Metro Lines 1 and 2 meet at Jiaochangkou and Hongyadong is on foot.
- Value: Guanyinqiao, north of the Jialing, about thirty minutes from the peninsula on Metro Line 3.
- Views: Nanbin Road, on the south bank, facing the skyline across the water.
- Business: Jiangbeizui, the new CBD at the river confluence, with modern towers and wide pavements.
- Airport: every passenger flight now lands at Jiangbei's Terminal 3, where Metro Line 10 leaves from B1.
In Chongqing a straight line is only a suggestion. The right neighbourhood saves you more than stairs - it saves you the taxi you would otherwise take to cross a river you can already see.
What is the best area to stay in Chongqing?
For a first visit, stay in Jiefangbei on the peninsula. Metro Lines 1 and 2 meet at Jiaochangkou, Hongyadong is on foot, and every river crossing starts here. Guanyinqiao, north of the Jialing, is better value, with Line 3 running to the peninsula without a change. Nanbin Road trades convenience for the skyline view. Ciqikou is atmospheric but forty minutes out - a second-visit choice, not a first one.
Indicative rates for a standard double room: ¥500-1,200 around Jiefangbei, ¥400-900 in Guanyinqiao, ¥600-1,400 on Nanbin Road and at Jiangbeizui.

| Jiangbeizui (江北嘴) | New CBD, river confluence | Business, modern hotels | ¥600-1,400 |
| Nanbin Road (南滨路) | South bank, skyline views | Views, couples, a slower pace | ¥600-1,400 |
| Ciqikou & Shapingba (磁器口·沙坪坝) | Old town and university district | Atmosphere, rail connections | ¥350-800 |
Jiefangbei & Hongyadong: the first-timer base
Our default recommendation for a first visit.
Why it works
- Position: the peninsula tip, with Metro Lines 1 and 2 crossing at Jiaochangkou and Line 2 stopping at Linjiangmen. Both river banks are a short ride away.
- Sights: Hongyadong's stilted houses are a ten-minute walk, and the cable car across the Yangtze leaves from nearby.
- Food: the lanes behind the pedestrian street hold the hotpot and noodle shops locals use; the street front itself is priced for visitors.
Guanyinqiao: the value base
The best rates within reach of everything, north of the river.
Why it works
- Transport: Metro Line 3 runs from Guanyinqiao to the peninsula without a change. Every flight now lands at T3, where Line 10 leaves from B1.
- Value: the same hotel standard as Jiefangbei at a lower rate, because it sits across the river from the sights.
- Life: a genuine shopping and restaurant district used by people who live here, rather than a street built for visitors.
Jiangbeizui: the business choice
Glass towers at the meeting of the two rivers.
Why it works
- Hotels: the newest and quietest international-standard stock in the city, built for the finance district next door.
- Position: Metro Line 6 stops at Grand Theatre, one stop from the peninsula across the Jialing.
- Views: the confluence is directly opposite, which makes the upper floors the best vantage point in Chongqing.
Nanbin Road: the view across the water
The postcard angle, from the quieter side.
Why it works
- Views: the whole peninsula skyline faces you across the Yangtze, and it is the reason to stay on this bank.
- Pace: a riverside road rather than a hill district, so walking and taxis both behave normally.
- Food: the riverside restaurants specialise in river fish, and the clientele is local rather than tour groups.
Ciqikou & Shapingba: the old-town stay
For a second visit, or an early train west.
Why it works
- Character: Ciqikou's stone lanes and teahouses are the closest thing to the old river port, though the main street is busy by mid-morning.
- Rail: Shapingba is a high-speed rail station on Metro Line 1, which makes an early departure to Chengdu simple.
- Value: the cheapest rates of any area on this page.
By trip type
A short answer for every kind of visitor.
| Traveller | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First-timers | Jiefangbei | Central, sights on foot, both rivers reachable |
| Couples | Nanbin Road | The skyline view from the quiet bank |
| Food | Jiefangbei or Guanyinqiao | Hotpot and noodle shops used by locals |
| Families | Guanyinqiao | Space, value, Line 3 to the peninsula |
| Business | Jiangbeizui | New CBD stock, quiet nights |
| Budget | Ciqikou / Shapingba | The lowest rates, Line 1 to the centre |
| Early train to Chengdu | Shapingba | Walk to the platform, not a taxi at dawn |
Booking practicalities
Two rivers, and the metro is not a grid
Chongqing sits on a peninsula between the Yangtze and the Jialing, and crossing water is the friction that shapes every journey. A destination that looks close on a map can need a bridge, a tunnel or a funicular. Plan in crossings, not in kilometres.
- Line 2 is the monorail that runs through a residential building at Liziba. It is a real commuter line, and the ride is worth an hour of anyone's first afternoon.
- Taxis are cheap. The meter starts at ¥10, and ¥11 overnight, which makes them a reasonable substitute for walking when the hills win.
- Bridges jam from about 17:30. If your hotel is across the river from your dinner, leave early or take the metro.
From Jiangbei airport
Chongqing's gateway is Jiangbei (CKG), about 21 km north-east of Jiefangbei. The municipality's four other airports - Wanzhou, Qianjiang, Wushan and Xiannushan - serve the far counties rather than the city. Every domestic and international flight now uses T3: T2 stopped handling passenger flights in December 2025, so check your booking against the terminal, not the airline's old habits.
- From T3: Metro Line 10 leaves from B1, roughly 06:30-23:25, ¥2-7 by distance. Change at Hongtudi to Line 6 for Xiaoshizi, which surfaces at Hongyadong and Jiefangbei - about 45-50 minutes in total.
- To Guanyinqiao: Line 3 links Guanyinqiao to the peninsula without a change, but its airport station serves the old T2, so from T3 use Line 10 into the city or a taxi.
- Airport shuttle: the K01 service runs to Jiefangbei via Shangqingsi, ¥15, 50-70 minutes depending on traffic. Better than the metro with heavy luggage.
- Taxi: ¥50-90 to the peninsula, 40-50 minutes. Line 10 runs until about 23:25, so a late arrival may mean taxi or the airport shuttle.
Check the property accepts foreign passports
Almost all licensed hotels register international guests without issue, and no separate permit is required in order to take foreign guests. A minority of small guesthouses and apartment rentals still turn foreign visitors away - common among the hillside conversions around Hongyadong - which is not permitted. Confirm in the booking notes before you pay. At check-in you show your passport and the hotel registers it with the police, which is routine.
When prices move
- Peak weeks: National Day (1-7 October), Labour Day and Chinese New Year. Chongqing fills with domestic visitors and the peninsula becomes difficult to move through.
- Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November): the two windows worth planning around, and priced accordingly at weekends.
- Summer (July-August): 38-40°C and humid. Rates fall because the city is genuinely unpleasant at two in the afternoon, though the nights are the point of Chongqing.
Book smart
- Compare Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and the hotel's own site; booking direct sometimes beats the platforms.
- Ask which street entrance the taxi can reach. In a hill city this is not a trivial question, and a hotel with a rear lift can save ten minutes with luggage.
- Ask reception to hold your bags after check-out. Confirm at booking whether there is a charge.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Chongqing for tourists?
Jiefangbei, on the peninsula, is the best base for a first visit: Metro Lines 1 and 2 cross there, Hongyadong and the Yangtze cable car are on foot, and every river crossing starts from the centre. Guanyinqiao north of the Jialing is better value, and Line 3 reaches the peninsula without a change. Every flight now lands at T3, where Line 10 leaves from B1.
How do I get from Jiangbei airport to the city centre?
From Terminal 3, Metro Line 10 leaves from B1 and costs 2-7 yuan by distance. Change at Hongtudi to Line 6 for Xiaoshizi, which brings you out at Hongyadong and Jiefangbei in about 45-50 minutes. The K01 airport shuttle runs to Jiefangbei for 15 yuan in 50-70 minutes. A taxi is 50-90 yuan and takes 40-50 minutes.
Is Chongqing walkable?
Not in the way most cities are. Chongqing is built on hills between two rivers, so a short distance on a map can mean stairs, escalators or a lift through a building. The metro and cheap taxis do most of the work, and comfortable shoes matter more here than in any other Chinese city.
Should I stay on the north or south bank of the river?
Stay on the peninsula at Jiefangbei if you want the sights on foot. Stay on Nanbin Road on the south bank if you want the skyline view and a quieter base, accepting a taxi ride to reach the centre. Guanyinqiao, north of the Jialing, is the value option with the fastest airport connection.
Can foreigners stay anywhere in Chongqing?
Nearly all licensed hotels register international guests without issue. Small guesthouses and apartment rentals sometimes turn foreign visitors away, which is common among the hillside conversions around Hongyadong, though the practice is not permitted. Confirm the property accepts foreign passports before booking.
