Start with the legal clock. Then make the city usable. The exact route depends on whether you are moving for work, study, family or a shorter stay.
This guide gives the order of work. It does not replace case-specific advice from your employer, university, the Exit-Entry Administration or the 12367 immigration service.
Confirm your visa, work-permit and residence-permit route before travel. Some eligible M-visa holders in Shanghai may obtain a work permit after entry and then apply for a work-type residence permit; this is not the same as changing an M visa into a Z visa.
Keep the admission notice and any JW201/JW202 documentation your institution requires. The university should tell you whether a health examination and residence permit are needed.
Confirm which relationship, invitation and sponsor documents apply. Do not assume the work or study checklist is interchangeable with a family route.
Accommodation registration, a usable payment method and transport setup still matter. A local bank account or health examination may not be relevant in your first week.
Register accommodation after arriving at a non-hotel address. Hotels normally register their guests.
Complete the post-entry work-permit step where applicable, coordinated by the employer.
Apply for a residence permit when your visa and purpose of stay require one.
Register the new accommodation within 24 hours; residence-permit address details may also need updating within 10 days.
Work, study and family cases differ. Confirm the route before travel and keep written instructions from the organisation handling your application.
Documents, access to your home number and a payment fallback matter more than packing every household item.
Do the minimum required to reach your address, register correctly and pay for ordinary purchases.
From Pudong Airport, Metro, taxi/ride-hailing and the Maglev are the main options. The Maglev reaches Longyang Road in about eight minutes and the single fare was ¥50 when last verified; it is not a direct ride to most hotels. Hongqiao Airport is already connected to the urban Metro network. Save the destination in Chinese before leaving the terminal.
A mainland SIM makes deliveries, local calls and account setup easier. Shanghai's international-service centres operate at specified terminals at Pudong and Hongqiao airports, but counters and opening arrangements can change. An eSIM or roaming plan is a useful bridge if your handset supports it.
Hotels normally register guests. If you stay in a private home, rented flat or other non-hotel accommodation, register within 24 hours. Shanghai provides online self-declaration as well as police-station or community service-window routes. The guest, host or accommodation provider may handle the declaration.
A Chinese mobile number is useful but is not stated as a legal prerequisite in the official guidance. Keep the registration result: it may be requested later.
Do not make a Chinese bank account a Day 1 dependency. International cards, cash and eligible foreign cards linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay give you several ways to pay while you settle in.
Your employer or university should lead the administrative sequence. Keep appointments flexible and allow time for different branches to request different documents.
Check the deadline, appointment location and original documents. If you are applying for a residence permit, do not let the first-week errands obscure the usual 30-day post-entry deadline.
A health certificate is generally relevant when you plan to live, work or study in Shanghai for a year or more, and for residence permits valid for more than one year. Requirements vary.
The official guidance says to book at least two weeks ahead, avoid food for five hours while water is allowed, and expect the certificate in about three working days. Bring the documents specified for your route.
Foreign residents can apply for a renminbi account with valid identification, but banks and branches may request additional proof for due diligence. Ask your employer or university for a branch familiar with international customers and set aside half a day. Do not assume English service, a fixed completion time or an on-the-spot card.
Once the formal route is moving, set up transport, food, healthcare and - only when you are ready - longer-term housing.
Lease length, deposit, rent schedule and agency fee are contract terms, not universal Shanghai standards. Treat live listings and quoted prices as time-sensitive.
The relocation guide does not need to become a city encyclopaedia. Pick one walk, one meal and one museum or park.
Go early, before the riverfront becomes busy. Save East Nanjing Road or your preferred starting point in Amap.
Choose by location and current opening status rather than relying on a permanent shortlist of restaurants or prices.
Shanghai Museum operates at People's Square and the East Museum. Basic displays, special exhibitions and peak periods can have different booking rules.
