Shopping on Taobao, JD & Pinduoduo
How to shop on China's three biggest e-commerce platforms as a foreigner. Registration, payment, shipping, and how to avoid getting scammed.

Which should you use?
Use Taobao if you want the widest selection and do not mind comparing sellers. Use JD for electronics, appliances, and anything where authenticity matters — the premium is worth it. Use Pinduoduo for cheap household basics and snacks where quality is not critical. Many expats use Taobao for most purchases and switch to JD for electronics.
Can foreigners use these apps?
Short answer: yes. Here is what you need.
What you need to get started
- ✓ All three platforms accept foreign passport registration. You do not need a Chinese ID card.
- ✓ Payment: Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign bank card (Visa/Mastercard). You cannot pay without one of these.
- ✓ A Chinese phone number. Browsing works without one, but ordering requires registration via SMS verification. Get a local SIM card.
- ✗ No English versions. All three apps are Chinese-only. Use in-app image translation, screenshots with translation apps, or the WeChat/Alipay mini-program versions which have slightly cleaner interfaces.
- ✓ Mini-program shortcut: Taobao and JD both have lightweight versions inside the WeChat and Alipay apps. These are sometimes easier to navigate than the standalone apps, and they skip some of the aggressive notification spam.
How to register
The process is similar across all three platforms. JD has the smoothest foreigner experience.
Step-by-step registration
Search 淘宝 (Taobao), 京东 (JD), or 拼多多 (Pinduoduo) in your phone's app store. All three are on iOS and Android.
This is usually on the first screen. Enter your Chinese phone number, then enter the SMS verification code you receive.
6 to 20 characters, must include letters and numbers. Write it down.
Go to 我的 (My/Me) → 设置 (Settings) → 账户与安全 (Account Security) → 实名认证 (Real-Name Verification).
Upload a clear photo of your passport photo page. Some platforms also ask for a selfie holding your passport.
Usually takes 1 to 24 hours. You will receive an SMS when approved.
How to pay
The payment system protects you — here is how it works.
Payment methods and buyer protection
- ✓ Default payment: Alipay or WeChat Pay. All three platforms process payments through these apps. When you check out, you are redirected to Alipay or WeChat to complete payment.
- ✓ Foreign bank cards work. Visa, Mastercard, and some other international cards work if linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay first. Set this up before you try to shop.
- ✓ JD accepts some international cards directly. A few sellers on JD allow direct international card payment without going through Alipay.
- ✓ Escrow protection (支付宝担保交易). This is the most important safety feature. When you pay, your money goes to Alipay (not the seller). The seller only receives it after you confirm delivery. If the item never arrives or is wrong, you can request a refund and Alipay holds the funds.
How to search without speaking Chinese
You do not need to read Chinese to find what you want. Here is how.
Practical search strategies
- ✓ Use English keywords. Many popular items have English titles in their listings, especially electronics, fashion items, and international brands. Search "charger cable type c" or "yoga mat thick" and you will get results.
- ✓ Image search (camera icon). Taobao's image search is surprisingly accurate. Take a photo of any item you want, tap the camera icon in the search bar, and it will find visually similar products. This works on JD too.
- ✓ Copy-paste Chinese keywords. Use the table below. Search the Chinese term, then browse by photo — the Chinese titles do not matter as much once you can see the products.
- ✓ Translation apps. Screenshot the app, open the screenshot in Google Translate or Baidu Translate, and read the translated overlay. A bit tedious but effective when you need to understand details.

Understanding a product listing
Decode the seller page so you know what you are actually buying.
How to read a product page
The first number you see is the listed price — usually the cheapest variant. The actual price changes when you select a 颜色分类 (colour/type) or 规格 (specification). A phone case might show ¥5, but when you select "iPhone 16 Pro" it becomes ¥25.
月销 = monthly sales. 累计销量 = total sales since listing. Higher numbers = more reliable.
Look for crown (皇冠) or diamond (钻石) badges — these indicate high-volume, established sellers. 天猫 (Tmall) sellers on Taobao are verified businesses with stricter quality controls. JD sellers with the 京东自营 (JD Self-Operated) badge are the most trustworthy.
Filter by 有图 (with photos) to see real customer shots. These are the most honest representation of what you will receive. Ignore reviews with only text — the photos tell the real story.
运费 = shipping fee. Most items ship free (包邮). Look for 24h/48h dispatch tags — these sellers ship within 24 or 48 hours of your order.
Where the seller dispatches from. Closer to you = faster delivery. Guangdong and Zhejiang are the two major manufacturing and shipping hubs.
Shipping & delivery
Getting your parcel to your door. This is where most expats get confused.
Address format
China uses this format: Province → City → District → Street → Building → Room number. Enter your address in Chinese — English addresses cause delays or failed deliveries. Save both your home and office addresses in the app so you can select them with one tap.

What happens after you order
- ✓ Courier delivery: Most parcels are dropped at your doorstep (if the building allows it) or deposited in the building's parcel shelf (快递架) or smart locker (快递柜). You will receive an SMS with a pickup code for locker deliveries.
- ✓ Delivery times: JD (京东物流) = 1 to 2 days in cities. Taobao = 2 to 5 days. Pinduoduo = 3 to 7 days. Rural addresses add 2 to 3 days to all estimates.
- ✓ Tracking: All three platforms show real-time courier tracking with a live map in the order details page. You can see exactly where your package is.
- ✗ Missed delivery: The courier will call you — in Chinese. If you do not answer, they usually redeliver the next day or leave the parcel at a nearby pickup point (菜鸟驿站 for Taobao, 京东快递柜 for JD). Reply to the SMS instead of answering the call; most couriers respond to text messages.
Returns & refunds
China has strong consumer protection laws. Here is how to use them.
The return process
All three platforms offer 7-day no-reason returns (七天无理由退货) on most items. Exceptions: underwear, custom-made items, fresh food, and opened cosmetics.
- 1Go to 我的 (My) → 我的订单 (My Orders) and find the order.
- 2Tap 申请退款/退货 (Apply for Refund/Return).
- 3Select a reason (有质量问题 = defective; 不喜欢 = just do not like it; 和描述不符 = not as described).
- 4Wait for seller approval — usually within 24 hours.
- 5Ship the item back using the return label the platform generates. Keep the tracking number.
- 6Refund timeline: 1 to 7 days to your Alipay or WeChat balance, up to 15 days back to a foreign bank card.
Common scams & pitfalls
Chinese e-commerce is generally safe, but these are worth knowing.

Major sale dates
- ✓ 6.18 (18 June): JD's anniversary sale. Originally JD-only, now all platforms participate. Good for electronics and home appliances — JD discounts are genuinely good during this period.
- ✓ 11.11 (Singles' Day): The biggest sale of the year. Genuine discounts on electronics, branded goods, and home appliances. Clothing and accessories have deeper markdowns too. Many sellers offer pre-sale deposits (定金) weeks in advance to lock in prices.
- ✓ 12.12 (12 December): A smaller follow-up sale, about one month after Singles' Day. Good for items you missed during 11.11, but the discounts are not as deep.
- ✗ Chinese New Year (Spring Festival): Do not order anything urgent 1 to 2 weeks before Chinese New Year. Courier networks shut down, and most sellers stop shipping. Some items ordered in late January may not arrive until mid-February. Plan ahead.
