Where to Stay in Moganshan
Five bases on the mountain, compared honestly: which village suits a weekend, which one needs a car, and where the money actually goes.
Moganshan is not a sight. It is a temperature, a smell of bamboo after rain, and a reason to leave Shanghai on a Friday afternoon. The bed you choose decides whether you get that or a car park.
At a glance
- Five bases, from ¥250 in Deqing town to ¥3,500 in the mountaintop villas.
- Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing: 1 hour 5 to 1 hour 15, ¥72 to ¥103 second class.
- Deqing station to Yucun: 30 to 40 minutes by taxi, ¥60 to ¥100.
- First weekend without a car: Yucun village.
- Laoling and Fatou need a car; taxis are scarce after dark.
- Two nights is the useful minimum; one is a stopover.

What is the best area to stay in Moganshan?
Yucun for a first weekend: it works without a car, with shuttles to the mountain and restaurants on foot. The mountaintop suits anyone who wants the old villas and the view. Laoling is better for three nights than two, Fatou for groups and water, Deqing town for late arrivals.
Pick by how you will move
- First visit, no car: Yucun, the village at the foot of the scenic area and the transfer hub for everything above it. Restaurants, cafes and the shuttle within walking distance.
- Views and old villas: the mountaintop, inside the scenic area. Stone villas from the 1920s, bamboo on three sides, and the reason most photographs of Moganshan look the way they do.
- Space and rice fields: Laoling, a working farming valley south of the village, where the guesthouses face terraces rather than each other.
- Streams and swimming: Fatou, west of the mountain, with shallow rivers, bamboo groves and the quietest nights in the area.
- Budget and convenience: Deqing town, 30 to 40 minutes away, with ordinary hotels and ordinary prices. You trade the mountain at dawn.
The areas at a glance
Five areas, from ¥250 in Deqing town to ¥3,500 in the mountaintop villas for a high-season weekend. Yucun runs ¥500 to ¥1,200, Laoling ¥450 to ¥1,100, Fatou ¥400 to ¥900. Pricing is volatile, so treat the range as a shape rather than a quote.
| Area | Best for | Typical double | Getting around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yucun village | First visits, no car | ¥500 - 1,200 | On foot, shuttle |
| Mountaintop villas | Views, heritage houses | ¥900 - 3,500 | Shuttle, hotel car |
| Laoling | Families, rice terraces | ¥450 - 1,100 | Car or Didi |
| Fatou | Streams, groups, quiet | ¥400 - 900 | Car or Didi |
| Deqing town | Value, late arrivals | ¥250 - 550 | Car, then shuttle |
Yucun: the village at the gate
The default for a first weekend, and the only base that works without a car.
What the village gives you
- Position: at the foot of the scenic area, beside the transfer centre where private cars stop and the shuttle up the mountain begins. You arrive, park the bag, and walk to dinner.
- Supply: the densest cluster of guesthouses, from converted village houses to design-led small hotels, plus a main street of cafes, noodle shops and a small market.
- Evening: it stays alive after the day trippers leave, which is more than can be said for the mountain road.
The mountaintop: old villas and bamboo
The historic core, where the stone houses sit between roughly 400 and 700 metres and the air is a few degrees cooler than the village.
Why the address matters
- Architecture: villas built between the 1890s and the 1930s as summer retreats, in stone and timber, many now run as small hotels. This is the part of Moganshan that cannot be replicated.
- Walking: trails start at the door. Sword Pond, the Luhua Dang park and the bamboo paths are reachable on foot rather than by shuttle.
- Mornings: staying inside the scenic area buys you the hour before the first coaches arrive, which is the whole point.
Laoling: rice terraces and families
A farming valley rather than a resort strip, better for three nights than two.
Space and rice fields
- Setting: terraced rice and bamboo on both sides of a narrow lane, with guesthouses that open onto fields instead of a road.
- Children: flat paths, shallow water and farm animals make it easier than the mountain for young families.
- Value: the same money buys a larger room and a garden here than on the mountain, though you lose the villa atmosphere.
Fatou: streams, groups and slow days
The western valleys, where the water is clean and the nights are silent.
Water and quiet
- Water: shallow streams run through most of the valley, which makes it the summer base if you want to swim or paddle rather than look at a view.
- Groups: larger houses with kitchens and courtyards are common here, and the price per head falls quickly for six or more.
- Distance: 20 to 30 minutes by car from Yucun, far enough that the weekend traffic disappears.
- Next door: Anji is two hours west by car, with more rivers and fewer restored villas.
Deqing town: the practical fallback
Not scenic, but it solves late arrivals and sold-out weekends.
A bed near the station
- Transport: Deqing station is on the high-speed line from Shanghai, and the town has ordinary taxis at ordinary prices.
- Prices: roughly half of village rates, with real breakfast and a supermarket that sells something other than souvenirs.
- When to use it: a Friday night arrival after the last shuttle, or a holiday weekend when the mountain is fully booked.
How do you get to Moganshan?
Rail plus taxi is the fastest route: Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing in 1 hour 5 to 1 hour 15 for ¥72 to ¥103, then 30 to 40 minutes by taxi to Yucun for ¥60 to ¥100. Driving takes two and a half to three hours, and private cars stop at the transfer centre below the village.
| Route | Time | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing by rail | 1h 05 - 1h 15 | ¥72 - 103 second class |
| Deqing station to Yucun by taxi | 30 - 40 min | ¥60 - 100 |
| Deqing station to Yucun by bus | 30 - 40 min | ¥10 |
| Shanghai to Yucun by car | 2h 30 - 3h | Tolls and fuel |
| Shuttle from Yucun to the mountain | 15 - 20 min | ¥35 return, or in a combined ticket |
When should you go?
Spring and autumn are the seasons people mean by Moganshan. Summer is cooler on the ridge but busy and priced accordingly. Winter is quiet and partly closed, and December to February is the cheapest window if you accept that some places shut.
By season
- April to June: bamboo shoots, mist and good light. Weekends fill three weeks ahead.
- July and August: five to six degrees cooler than Shanghai, which is exactly why everyone else has the same idea. Book early and expect midweek prices to look like weekend prices.
- October and November: clear air, dry trails and the most settled weather of the year. Our preferred window.
- December to February: cold, damp and very quiet. Some restaurants and smaller guesthouses close, so confirm before booking.
Which base suits which trip
If you only read one table, read this one.
| Your trip | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two nights from Shanghai, no car | Yucun | Shuttle, food and trails on foot |
| Anniversary, view first | Mountaintop | Heritage villa, bamboo at the window |
| Family with young children | Laoling | Flat paths, fields, larger rooms |
| Group of six or more | Fatou | Houses with kitchens and courtyards |
| Late Friday arrival | Deqing town | Close to the station, half the price |
| Week of remote work | Yucun or Laoling | Reliable wifi, real food, long walks |
Booking practicalities
The four things that actually catch people out.
Cars stop at the transfer centre
Private vehicles cannot enter the scenic core. You park at Yucun and continue by shuttle, which runs on a fixed loop. Arrive before four in the afternoon if you want a calm transfer with luggage.
Tickets and shuttle are separate from the room
The scenic area charges admission, and a combined ticket with the shuttle is the sensible purchase: admission runs about ¥100 in peak season and ¥80 in spring and autumn, and the shuttle from Yucun is ¥35 return. Tickets are valid for three days, so keep the paper or the code. Online prices are usually lower than the gate.
Confirm foreign guest registration
Most larger hotels and established guesthouses are licensed to receive foreign passports. Small village homestays sometimes are not. Ask in writing before you pay, and keep the reply.
Cash is optional, signal is not
Alipay and WeChat Pay work in most places, including small shops. Mobile signal is patchy on the upper trails, so download an offline map and screenshot your booking before you go up.

Primary documents
- Rail fares and timetables: China Railway's English booking site lists every service and the fare band it sells. The ranges on this page are those on sale in October 2026; fares move by departure, so read them as bands rather than prices.
- The county that administers Moganshan: The Deqing county government publishes the scenic area's transfer rules and ticket notices, which are the basis for the section on the Yucun transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions that come up before booking.
Do I need a car in Moganshan?
Not for Yucun, where the village, the transfer centre and the shuttle cover a car-free weekend. You do need one for Laoling and Fatou, which are valleys of scattered guesthouses with no reliable taxi supply after dark.
How do I get to Moganshan from Shanghai?
High-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing takes about an hour and costs ¥72 to ¥103 in second class, depending on the train. A taxi from the station to Yucun is 30 to 40 minutes and ¥60 to ¥100, so door to door is around two and a half hours.
Can I drive up to the mountain?
Not into the scenic core. Private cars park at the Yucun transfer centre and everyone continues by shuttle, hotel guests included. The shuttle takes 15 to 20 minutes, so pack light or ask the property to meet you.
Is one night enough?
Enough to see the mountain, not enough to feel it. Two nights gives you one full day of walking and one quiet morning before the coaches arrive, which is the reason most people come. One night suits a stopover on a longer trip.
When is the cheapest time to stay?
Midweek in winter, excluding the week around Chinese New Year. Spring and autumn weekends are the most expensive nights, and summer behaves like a holiday season throughout. December to February is cheapest, though some places close.
