Where to Stay in the Yangtze Delta
Six bases within three hours of Shanghai, compared honestly: which one fits your trip, which two combine, and where the money goes.
The delta is not a region you tour. It is a set of short trips that happen to share a rail network. Choose one, do it properly, and come back for the rest.
At a glance
- Six bases within three hours of Shanghai: the city itself, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuzhen, Moganshan and Anji.
- Closest: Suzhou, 23 to 30 minutes from Hongqiao by rail.
- Furthest: Moganshan, roughly two and a half hours door to door.
- Indicative doubles run from ¥250 in a county town to ¥1,800 in Shanghai or on the mountain.
- Two nights in one base beats four nights split between two.
- Every base is reachable by rail; Moganshan and Anji need a taxi at the far end.

Which base should you choose?
Match the base to the length of the trip. Two or three nights: stay in Shanghai or Suzhou and treat the rest as day trips. Four or five: add Hangzhou. A weekend: Moganshan or Anji, both under three hours. One night of atmosphere: Wuzhen, inside the gates rather than outside.
Pick by the shape of your trip
- Three nights or fewer: Suzhou or Wuzhen. Both are close enough that travel does not eat the trip, and both are best in the early morning.
- Four or five nights: Hangzhou or Shanghai. A city with a lake, or a city with everything else, plus one day out.
- A weekend out of the city: Moganshan or Anji. Cooler air, bamboo, and a hotel that is part of the point.
- A first trip to China: Shanghai, then one of the others. The delta rewards a base rather than a tour.
The six bases at a glance
A good mid-range double in high season, and the fastest realistic journey from central Shanghai. Each city page breaks the full span down by area, from guesthouses to suites.
| Base | Best for | Nights | Typical double | From Shanghai |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai | First trips, business, food | 2 - 3 | ¥700 - 1,800 | Origin |
| Suzhou | Gardens, canals, day trips | 1 - 2 | ¥450 - 1,400 | 25 min by rail |
| Hangzhou | Lake, tea hills, slow days | 2 | ¥550 - 1,500 | 45 - 60 min by rail |
| Wuzhen | Water town, photography | 1 | ¥400 - 1,200 | 1.5 - 2 h by rail and taxi |
| Moganshan | Mountain air, old villas | 2 | ¥500 - 1,800 | 2.5 h by rail and taxi |
| Anji | Bamboo, rivers, families | 2 | ¥400 - 1,200 | 1h 20 - 1h 40 by rail, then taxi |
Shanghai: the base you fly into
Stay central for a first visit, and treat the delta as day trips rather than a tour.
What the city gives you
- Position: the airport and the high-speed network both land here, so every other base on this page is a morning away.
- Neighbourhoods: the old French Concession for walking, the Bund for the view, Jing'an for shops and metro lines that go everywhere.
- Full guide: Where to Stay in Shanghai covers the districts, rates and the airport transfer in detail.
- City bases elsewhere: Where to Stay in Beijing applies the same method to the capital, which is a separate trip rather than a delta day out.
Suzhou: the closest city
Twenty-five minutes from Hongqiao, and the easiest place to understand what the delta looked like before the towers.
The closest city
- Density: gardens, canals and a museum within a twenty-minute walk, which is rare in a Chinese city of this size.
- Timing: the gardens are calm before nine. That alone justifies a night rather than a day trip.
- Full guide: Where to Stay in Suzhou compares the old town, Jinji Lake and Tongli.
Hangzhou: the lake and the hills
Two nights minimum. One night is a hotel stay with a walk attached.
Two nights, minimum
- Variety: a lake you can walk around, tea villages in the hills and a wetland park west of the city, all within half an hour.
- Transport: Hangzhou East is the main rail hub, with Metro Line 1 to the lakefront and Metro Line 19 from the airport.
- Full guide: Where to Stay in Hangzhou covers six areas around the lake with rates and arrival notes.
Wuzhen: one night inside the gates
Rebuilt to a single plan in the 2000s. Worth a night, not a week.
One night, inside the gates
- The point: the town between nine and five is a queue. Before and after those hours it is a canal town, and only overnight guests get that version.
- Access: no station of its own. You arrive through Tongxiang, then by taxi or local bus.
- Full guide: Where to Stay in Wuzhen explains the ticket and re-entry rules, which catch people out.
Moganshan: the mountain weekend
The default escape from Shanghai. Private cars stop at the foot of the mountain, which shapes where you should sleep.
The mountain weekend
- Air: several degrees cooler than the city, with bamboo, stone villas and a walking network that starts at the door.
- Constraint: vehicles stop at Yucun and continue by shuttle, so a mountaintop stay means packing light.
- Full guide: Where to Stay in Moganshan compares the village, the villas and the valleys.
Anji: the larger, quieter county
Bigger than Moganshan and less discovered. The trade-off is that you need a car for the valleys.
Bigger, quieter, slower
- Scale: bamboo forests, rivers and a high grassland ridge, spread across a county rather than a single mountain.
- Rail: direct trains from Hongqiao exist but are few. Check the return service before booking the room.
- Full guide: Where to Stay in Anji compares five bases, from the county town to the ridge.
Which two bases combine
The pairings that work without wasting a day in transit.
| Route | Nights | Why the pairing works |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai and Suzhou | 3 + 2 | 25 minutes apart, different centuries |
| Shanghai and Wuzhen | 2 + 1 | City then canal, one transfer |
| Shanghai and Hangzhou | 2 + 2 | Airport in, lake out, rail between |
| Hangzhou and Wuzhen | 2 + 1 | 90 minutes by road, both slow-paced |
| Hangzhou and Anji | 2 + 2 | Bamboo after the lake, an hour apart by rail |
| Shanghai and Moganshan | 2 + 2 | City then mountain, two and a half hours |
How do you get around the delta?
High-speed rail does the work. Hongqiao is the hub for Suzhou, Hangzhou, Tongxiang and Deqing, with departures every few minutes on the Suzhou line and hourly on the others. Book to the station nearest your bed: Suzhou North is fifteen kilometres from the old town, Suzhou station is two.
| Route | Time | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Hongqiao to Suzhou | 23 - 30 min | Suzhou station, not Suzhou North |
| Hongqiao to Hangzhou East | 45 - 60 min | Metro Line 1 to the lake |
| Hongqiao to Tongxiang, for Wuzhen | 40 - 50 min | Then 30 - 40 min taxi |
| Hongqiao to Deqing, for Moganshan | 1h 05 - 1h 15 | Then 30 - 40 min taxi |
| Hongqiao to Anji | 1h 20 - 1h 40 | Few direct services a day |
| Suzhou to Hangzhou | 1h 10 - 1h 40 | Direct, no need to return to Shanghai |
Booking practicalities
Four things that apply to every base on this page.
Foreign passport registration
Most international and upper mid-range hotels are licensed to receive foreign guests. Small guesthouses and homestays in villages and water towns sometimes cannot. Ask in writing before paying, and keep the reply.
Holiday pricing
National Day in early October, Labour Day in early May and the spring festival move rates by 100 to 300 per cent and fill the good rooms six weeks out. Midweek outside those windows is a different market.
Station names matter
Suzhou has five stations, Hangzhou four, Shanghai four. Booking the wrong one adds thirty to fifty minutes and a taxi. Check the arrival name before you pay.
Why the two tables differ
This page quotes a typical mid-range double so the six bases can be compared. The city pages quote the full span by area, which is why Moganshan runs from ¥250 in Deqing town to ¥3,500 on the mountain. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions.
Payments before you arrive
Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card covers almost everything, including buses, boats and village shops. Set it up before you land, not at a ticket window.
Official sources
The fares and the regional picture.
Primary documents
- Rail fares and timetables: China Railway's English booking site lists every service and the fare band it sells. The ranges on this page are those on sale in October 2026; fares move by departure, so read them as bands rather than prices.
- Regional context: The Ministry of Culture and Tourism keeps the national register of scenic areas and their official grades, which is where a 5A rating comes from rather than from a hotel's own marketing.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions that come up before booking.
How many days do I need in the Yangtze Delta?
A week covers two bases without rushing. Five to six nights splits comfortably between Shanghai and one of Suzhou or Hangzhou, both under an hour apart by rail. Three nights suits a single city, and one night is enough for Wuzhen.
Should I stay in Shanghai or Hangzhou?
Shanghai for a first trip, for food and for connections. Hangzhou for landscape and a slower pace. The high-speed train between them takes 45 to 60 minutes, so two nights in each is realistic and avoids choosing at all.
Which is better, Moganshan or Anji?
Moganshan for a two-night weekend with a village base and no car: the mountain is compact and a shuttle covers it. Anji is a whole county, so it rewards three nights and a car, and suits families who want rivers and space.
Can I visit Wuzhen as a day trip?
Yes, but you will see it between nine and five, which is the busiest part of the day. One night inside the west scenic area gives you the empty lanes before nine and the lanterns after five, from around ¥800 in high season.
Do I need a car in the delta?
No for Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Wuzhen, all reachable by rail and metro. You need one in Anji's valleys, and it helps in Moganshan's outer villages, though the mountain itself runs a shuttle from the Yucun transfer centre.
