Where to Stay in Shenzhen

Five bases, one border, and a rail network where the station decides the trip.

Shenzhen is a city built in forty years and arranged along a single east-west line. Decide which end of that line you need, and the hotel question answers itself.

Which part of Shenzhen should I stay in?

For a first visit, Futian: the metro crosses there, the border is one stop away and the museums and malls are on foot. Luohu suits anyone arriving from Hong Kong by train or leaving for Guangzhou. Nanshan and Shekou suit a longer stay, the tech district and the ferries to Macau and the airport. Bao'an exists for the airport, and the east coast for a weekend at the beach.

Pick by the trip

  • First visit, two nights: Futian, around the civic centre or Coco Park, where four metro lines cross.
  • Crossing at Luohu: Luohu, with Shenzhen station and the port in the same block.
  • Work in Nanshan: Shekou or the Science Park end, where the ferries to Macau and the airport also leave.
  • Early flight: Bao'an, on Line 11 from the airport.
  • Weekend by the sea: Dameisha or Yantian, on Line 8.
Rule of thumb: Shenzhen is long and thin. A hotel at the wrong end costs 40 minutes each way, and the metro is the only reliable way through the middle.

The areas at a glance

Indicative rates for a standard double in November 2026, before booking fees. The last column is the one that decides most trips: which station or port you arrive at.

Indicative, November 2026. Rates in the city centre are driven by exhibitions at the convention centres; check the calendar for the dates you want.

Futian: the default

City centre, border crossing and rail station in one district.

Why it works

  • Transport: Line 1, Line 2, Line 4 and Line 11 all cross Futian. The airport express ends here.
  • The border: Futian port is open 06:30 to 22:30, and the high-speed station under the district reaches West Kowloon in 14 minutes.
  • On foot: the civic centre, the library and the concert hall face each other along a single axis, with Coco Park behind them.
  • Electronics: Huaqiangbei is two stops away, on Line 1 and Line 2.
Watch for: the convention centre draws large events, and rates in the surrounding blocks double when one is on.

Luohu: the old crossing

The first way into Shenzhen, and still the most direct.

What it is good for

  • The port: open 06:30 to 24:00, with the metro station and the railway station in the same complex.
  • The trains: Shenzhen station serves the slower line to Guangzhou East, which is useful if Guangzhou South is inconvenient.
  • The city: older streets, lower rates and more street food than Futian, with the same Line 1 through both.
Be aware: the Luohu commercial district is built around cross-border shopping, with touts working the port exit. Walk past them and use the metro.

Nanshan and Shekou: technology and ferries

The newer half of the city, with the sea at the end of it.

For work, or for the boat

  • Shekou ferry terminal: sailings to Hong Kong airport, Macau and Zhuhai, with immigration in the terminal. Open 07:00 to 22:30.
  • The tech district: Science Park and Houhai hold most of the offices a business trip will visit, with Line 2 and Line 11 serving them.
  • The sea: Shenzhen Bay Park runs along the shore, and the coast road west of Shekou is the city's best walk.
For a longer stay, this is the area that feels like a city rather than a business park, and the ferries remove the airport run entirely.

Bao'an: the airport

Thirty-five minutes from Futian, and nothing else to recommend it.

When to book here

  • Before 08:00: Line 11 starts too late for a dawn departure, and the taxi is the only option.
  • The Expo: the new convention centre on the airport peninsula fills the local hotels during fairs.
  • What you give up: the city. There is a mall, a metro line, and a long ride to anything else.

Yantian and Dameisha: the coast

A weekend, not a base.

The sea, an hour from the centre

  • Dameisha: the accessible beach, reached on Line 8 from Futian in about an hour, with hotels facing the water.
  • Yantian: the container port and the coastal path north of it, quieter and less built up.
  • Dapeng peninsula: further east again, with the oldest villages in the region. No metro; allow 90 minutes by road.
Be aware: Saturday rates on the coast double, and the beach fills by 10:00. Go midweek if the dates are yours.

Crossing from Hong Kong

Six land ports and one rail crossing serve Hong Kong, and the hours differ enough to matter on a late arrival. These are the published opening times.

Shenzhen North is the other rail option and the one most national trains use. It is 30 minutes from Guangzhou South, and reaches central Futian on Line 4 — a longer transfer than most people expect.

Booking practicalities

Three things decide how a Shenzhen stay runs: which station your ticket names, which port you cross at, and whether a convention is in town.

Two stations, two jobs

Shenzhen North carries the national network from Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. Futian carries the Hong Kong line only. A ticket to the wrong one adds 30 to 40 minutes, so check before you pick a hotel.

Foreign passports at check-in

Refusing to receive foreign guests is not permitted, and no separate licence is needed. Confirm in writing if the property is small, and keep the reply with your booking.

Airport transfers

Line 11 from the airport to Futian takes 35 to 40 minutes for ¥9. A taxi is 30 to 40 minutes and ¥100 to ¥140. To the east coast, allow an hour or more either way.

Onwards to Guangzhou

Shenzhen North to Guangzhou South is about 30 minutes, and trains run through the day. Luohu to Guangzhou East is slower but lands you closer to the old city. Our train booking guide covers the passport side.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions that decide where to sleep.

Which part of Shenzhen should I stay in?
Futian for a first visit, because the metro crosses there and one station reaches Hong Kong in a quarter of an hour. Luohu for the older crossing and the Guangzhou trains, Nanshan and Shekou for the tech district and the ferries, Bao'an for the airport, and the east coast for a weekend by the sea.
Which border crossing should I use from Hong Kong?
Futian for the metro into the city centre, open 06:30 to 22:30. Luohu for the Guangzhou trains, open 06:30 to 24:00. Huanggang when you cross late, because it runs all night. Shenzhen Bay for coaches from Hong Kong airport, open 06:30 to 24:00.
What is the difference between Shenzhen North and Futian station?
Shenzhen North is the national hub, with high-speed trains to Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. Futian is on the Hong Kong line only, 14 minutes from West Kowloon, and it sits under the city centre. Check which one your ticket names before you book a hotel.
How do I get from Bao'an airport to the city?
Metro Line 11 runs from the airport to Futian in 35 to 40 minutes for ¥9. A taxi is 30 to 40 minutes and ¥100 to ¥140. The airport is on the western edge, so allow an hour to the east coast.
Should I stay on the east coast for Dameisha?
Stay there for a weekend by the sea, not for a city trip. Metro Line 8 reaches Dameisha in about an hour from Futian, and the beach hotels charge resort rates on Saturdays. Dapeng peninsula is further still and needs a car or a long bus ride.
Where is Huaqiangbei?
In Futian, on Line 1 and Line 2, four stops from Luohu and two from Futian's civic centre. The electronics markets run along Huaqiang North Road, and the metro station of the same name puts you in the middle of them.
How this guide was compiled. Verified 2 November 2026 against the Shenzhen Port Office's published crossing hours, the Futian–West Kowloon and Shenzhen North–Guangzhou South timetables, and Shenzhen Metro Line 11 fares and journey times. Room-rate figures are indicative: asking rates, not a quotation. Prices are indicative ranges rather than quotations, and exclude booking-site fees.
