Where to Stay in Guangzhou
Six areas, from the CBD to the fairground, compared by what they cost and what they connect to.
Guangzhou is a working city that happens to be pleasant. It rewards a base near a metro interchange more than a view, and it punishes anyone who books during the fair without checking the calendar first.
At a glance
- Six bases, from ¥300 by the airport to ¥4,000 in Pazhou during the fair.
- Airport to Tiyu Xilu: about 50 minutes on Line 3, ¥7 to ¥10.
- First visit: Zhujiang New Town, with three lines under it.
- Canton Fair: two sessions a year, three phases each, when rates rise two to three times.
- Guangzhou South to Hong Kong West Kowloon: about 48 minutes.
- Cheapest window: midweek in January and after the fair in November.

What is the best area to stay in Guangzhou?
For a first visit, stay in Zhujiang New Town: three metro lines meet there, the riverfront is on foot, and the airport train reaches it without a change. Business travellers at the fair should be in Pazhou, families and old-city walkers in Yuexiu, and anyone with a 06:00 flight at the airport. Everywhere else is a variant on those four.
Pick by the trip, not by the map
- First visit: Zhujiang New Town, the CBD east of the old city, where Line 3 and Line 5 meet and the riverfront is on foot.
- Old city and food: Yuexiu, around Beijing Road and Gongyuanqian, where Lines 1 and 2 cross.
- Shopping: Tianhe, with Tiyu Xilu as the busiest interchange in Guangzhou.
- Quiet and architecture: Liwan, around Shamian Island and the Xiguan lanes.
- Canton Fair: Pazhou on Line 8, walking distance from the Canton Fair Complex.
- Early flight: The Baiyun airport area, 45 to 60 minutes from the centre.
The areas at a glance
Rates are indicative for a standard double in November 2026, before booking fees. The Canton Fair column matters more than any of the others: in those three windows the whole city reprices, and Pazhou reprices first.
| Area | Suits | Double, indicative, Nov 2026 | Walk to metro | Airport / South station |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zhujiang New Town | First visits, river views, business | ¥600 - 1,400 | 3 to 10 min, Lines 3, 5 and the APM | 50 min / 40 min |
| Tianhe / Shipai | Shopping, dining, interchange | ¥450 - 1,100 | 2 to 8 min, Line 1 and 3 | 50 min / 35 min |
| Yuexiu / Beijing Road | Old city, walkable evenings | ¥350 - 900 | 3 to 10 min, Lines 1 and 2 | 55 min / 30 min |
| Liwan / Shamian | Quiet, architecture, families | ¥400 - 1,000 | 5 to 12 min, Lines 1 and 6 | 60 min / 30 min |
| Haizhu / Pazhou | The fair, exhibitions | ¥400 - 1,200; ¥1,500 - 4,000 in fair weeks | 5 to 15 min, Line 8 | 60 min / 25 min |
| Baiyun airport area | Early flights, long layovers | ¥300 - 700 | Shuttle or taxi | 10 min / 60 min |
Indicative, November 2026. Journey times are door to door without traffic, an assumption that fails between 17:30 and 19:00.
Zhujiang New Town: the first-timer base
Our default for a first trip.
What the position buys you
- Transport: Line 3 runs to the airport and to Guangzhou East; Line 5 crosses the old city; the APM loop links the riverfront sights.
- On foot: the Opera House, the library, the museum and the river promenade face each other across two squares.
- Rooms: the densest cluster of international hotels in the city, which keeps rates competitive outside the fair.
- Evenings: the Canton Tower lights opposite, visible from most river-facing rooms.
Tianhe and Shipai: shopping and interchange
The busiest ground in the city, and the most convenient.
Buying and eating
- Retail: Teemall and the Tianhe Road malls sit within a block of Tiyu Xilu, the interchange where Line 1 meets Line 3.
- Food: the densest restaurant map in Guangzhou, from Cantonese chains to Sichuan, with prices below the CBD's.
- Shipai: the village behind the towers is cheaper and louder, and a reasonable choice for a long stay on a budget.
Yuexiu and Beijing Road: the old city
Walkable, cheaper, and closer to how the city eats.
The old city
- Streets: Beijing Road is a pedestrian spine over Song-dynasty paving, and the lanes off it hold the dim sum the city is known for.
- Transport: Gongyuanqian is the crossing point of Lines 1 and 2, two stops from Guangzhou station and one change from the South station.
- Rooms: older buildings and smaller rooms at 20 to 30 per cent below Zhujiang New Town, with more character per yuan.
Liwan and Shamian: the quiet side
Colonial arcades, banyan trees, and no traffic.
The quiet side
- Shamian Island: a sandbank of 19th-century consulates and banks, now pedestrian, with the river on both sides.
- Xiguan: the arcaded lanes around Liwan, where the old Cantonese houses and the market streets survive intact.
- Hotels: heritage buildings and small boutiques rather than towers, so room counts are low and weekends sell out.
Haizhu and Pazhou: the fair
One purpose, done properly.
For the Canton Fair
- Position: the Canton Fair Complex has two metro stations on Line 8, Xingangdong and Pazhou, and the hotels along its north edge are a walk from the gates.
- Prices: a room that costs ¥450 in July costs ¥1,500 to ¥4,000 in a fair window, and the cheap end sells out first.
- Booking: two to three months ahead for the April session, three months for October. Pay the premium for a refundable rate; the fair calendar moves and cancellations are common.
- Elsewhere: staying on Line 8 towards Changgang or Kecun adds 20 to 30 minutes and halves the rate.
Baiyun airport area: for the early flight only
Ten minutes from the terminal, an hour from the city.
When it makes sense
- Flights before 08:00: the metro starts too late, and a taxi at 05:00 costs more than the room saving.
- Long layovers: a bed and a shower for six hours is a better trade than a city hotel you will not see.
- What you give up: dinner, the river and the old city. There is nothing here but the airport.
Canton Fair: the dates that move the whole city
The fair runs in three phases each spring and autumn, and each phase has its own crowd and its own rates. The 140th session opened on 15 October 2026 and closes on 4 November, in three phases: 15 to 19 October, 23 to 27 October, and 31 October to 4 November. The spring session keeps the same three-phase shape — 15 to 19 April, 23 to 27 April and 1 to 5 May — and the fair confirms the dates for each session on its own site rather than years ahead.
| Phase | Exhibits | Where to sleep |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Manufacturing, electronics, vehicles | Pazhou if booked early; Line 8 otherwise |
| Phase 2 | Household goods, gifts, building materials | The same, with slightly softer rates |
| Phase 3 | Textiles, clothing, health and leisure | The same, and the busiest for hotel bookings |
The two-day gaps between phases are the cheapest nights of the month, which is useful if your meetings straddle them.
Rates start climbing about a week before phase one and drop the day after phase three ends. Booking a refundable rate in January for April is the single move that saves the most money on this page.
Which area suits which trip
Six trips, one answer each. This assumes arrival by air or rail and no mid-trip hotel change.
| Your trip | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two nights, first visit | Zhujiang New Town | River, museums and three lines under the hotel |
| Three nights, eating and walking | Yuexiu / Beijing Road | Old city on foot, cheaper rooms |
| Canton Fair, phase one | Pazhou | Walk to the gates |
| Family, four nights | Liwan / Shamian | Quiet streets, the river, space |
| Hong Kong and Shenzhen stopover | Tianhe | Guangzhou East and the South station are both quick |
| 06:00 departure | Airport area | The metro is not running |
Booking practicalities
Four things decide whether a Guangzhou stay runs smoothly: which station you arrive at, whether the property takes foreign passports, when the fair is, and how you plan to reach the airport.
Foreign passports at check-in
Refusing to receive foreign guests is not permitted, and no separate licence is required. You will still meet a small property that hesitates, usually because the front desk has not registered a foreign guest before. Confirm in writing before you pay, and keep the reply with your booking.
Arriving from Baiyun airport
Metro Line 3 north extension runs from Airport South and Airport North to Tiyu Xilu, ¥7 one way. The first train leaves Airport South at 06:10 and the last at 23:00. A taxi is 45 to 60 minutes and ¥100 to ¥130 including tolls.
Arriving by train
Guangzhou South is the high-speed station, 25 to 35 minutes from Pazhou on Line 2 and Line 8, and about 40 minutes from Zhujiang New Town. Guangzhou East serves the older Shenzhen line and sits on Line 3. Guangzhou station, near Yuexiu, is the conventional one.
Onwards to Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guilin
Guangzhou South to Hong Kong West Kowloon is 47 minutes on the fastest service, with immigration done at West Kowloon. To Shenzhen North it is about 30 minutes. To Guilin about two and a half hours, and Yangshuo is a change or a through service away. Our train booking guide covers passports and seat classes.
When prices move
Fair weeks aside, rates peak around National Day in early October and Chinese New Year, and fall in the hot, wet weeks of June and July. Midweek in January is the cheapest window that is still comfortable.
